No Joy For UK Vigilantes
10 April 2007When even children’s charities don’t want it…… you know it’s a bad “child protection law.”
The Home Office (UK) have suggested that Sarah’s Law will NOT be implemented in the UK.
From the illegally discriminatory article at the BBC -
“A spokesman for the children’s charity Barnardo’s said: “The indications from Home Office sources that people in the community will not be able to ask for details of convicted paedophiles is encouraging.”
But it said it was waiting for a flat denial of earlier reports that members of the public would be able to ask officials to run checks on local people suspected of being paedophiles.
“Until we have it, we shall continue to be anxious about the potential for any sort of UK Megan’s Law to put children in great peril,” he said.”
Thank you to the Barnardo’s spokesman for some common sense.
I posted an article regarding my opinion of the “law” yesterday and I am pleased to hear that both friends convicted of minor offenses AND children will probably not be exposed to the dangers of this disgraceful “law.”
The law was not about child protection, as it increased the risk of people convicted of minor offenses (possession of unlawful images, etc) being tortured to the point of committing a serious offense. This law was about parents’ demands to have total assurance that their children are safe, which was unrealistic, misguided and destined to lead to a dangerous level of complacency.

Funny that we see this come out on tuesday, which is virtually the day after the Screws of the World (the domain of ‘Sarah’s Law‘ fanatics) is published.
Anyway, firstly, I’d like to know in what way the BBC’s article is illegal.
Concerning the issues at hand, if this law were to be brought in, the obvious concern surrounds the outing of a partially rehabilitated, hard core child rapist. Wouldn’t the publicity and resultant disrespect just set him back into his old ways?
Another problem is that there would remain no guaranteed option of ’starting afresh’ for any child sex offender.

That’s complicated. I’ll send you an e-mail about it either today or tomorrow. Maybe I’ll explain here too.
